"By the mid-nineties, Mr. Voodoo had established himself in the city's underground. Coming out of Brooklyn, he was part of the WBAI Underground Railroad circle with J-Smooth, while his radio appearances and freestyles brought his voice into the wider New York scene. Natural Elements — Voodoo, L-Swift, A-Butta and the wider circle around them — were building their reputation at the same time, through records, battles, radio and live sessions. With Charlemagne behind the boards, they developed a sound of their own, while the MCs pushed their writing, delivery and technical skills in a city where the standard was high.
This was New York in the mid-nineties: WBAI and Stretch & Bobbito on the radio, crews crossing paths, new records constantly appearing, and a generation of MCs taking the craft further in their own direction. Natural Elements were right in the middle of that movement, and Voodoo's voice was one of its most distinctive.
His recordings from those years capture the breadth of that period. The 1996 "Lyrical Tactics" 12-inch — with "Lyrical Tactics," "Shine" and "Hemlock," all produced by Charlemagne — sits at the center of a much larger body of work recorded around the same time.
