ParanormL & J Rawls - P&J Project - 2026

LP - 2026 - HHE

"ParanormL and J.Rawls first linked up through an overseas label called Swamp Records, which we were both signed to in 2007. J.Rawls was scheduled for a release, and the label had planned a tour for him and his artist, Holmskillit. Due to unforeseen circumstances, they needed someone to fill in for Holmskillit, and ParanormL's name was thrown in the hat. J.Rawls was down after hearing ParanormL's latest album, and this was the start of something special.

They did a week-long run from Tokyo to Osaka and had plenty of time to get to know each other. A brother-type bond was built, along with a mutual trust in their ability to rock shows without much rehearsal. The crowds were left slayed. Their first show at Club Asia was packed to the gills, and they really showed and proved.

With their shared love for hip hop and jazz-hop, it was a no-brainer that they should make something together while on the Japan tour. They started out with just one song, "What's That?", which eventually led to twelve tracks. In 2007, they released a full P&J mixtape hosted by Rawls, which received over 100,000 downloads.

Now almost 20 years later HHE has given this album the opportunity to exist in a physical form and reach listeners again. What began as a spontaneous collaboration between two artists on tour became a body of work that has continued to find its way to people over time." - courtesy of Hip Hop Enterprise

Youth Culture Power : Book + Album

"In our schools, Hip-Hop culture is the dominant culture among the students. In Youth Culture Power : A #HipHopEd Guide to Building Student Teacher Relationships and Increasing Student Engagement, Jason D. Rawls and John Robinson, educators and hip-hop artists with experience in the classrooms of urban schools, focus their efforts through Hip-Hop Based Education (HHBE). They argue that Hip-Hop culture could be useful in building relationships and building student engagement. The approach to achieve this is Youth Culture Pedagogy (YCP). In this volume, the authors lay the groundwork for YCP and how they envision its use within the classroom. YCP is based in a Foundation of Reality Pedagogy (Emdin, 2014), Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (Ladson-Billings, 1995), and HHBE (Hill, 2009; Petchauer, 2009). We define it as a pedagogical approach which uses students own culture to create scenarios to facilitate learning. In Youth Culture Power, the authors put forth their C.A.R.E. Model of youth pedagogy to help teachers create a positive learning environment by building relationships and lessons around students’ own culture. Instead of forcing students to give up the things they frequent, they feel teachers should discuss them and when possible, use them in lessons. The purpose of this book is to present a fresh take on why educators should not discount the culture of youth within the classroom. Book & Album will be available on 6/1/19" - John Robinson

"From Columbus and Pittsburgh, so many flyers had been distributed that it was almost impossible to take a step without noticing those abandoned on the sidewalk.
Drawn in an anarchic way, cables ran along the streets to the place requisitioned for the event. It was necessary to feed the walls of speakers which, in due course, would spit heavy basses and would make the dancers go wild. In the surrounding stores, the first suspicious disappearances of spraycans had been reported, one could see B-Boys pass a lino roll under the arm.

Sparkling sneakers and dance sequences, scratching and beat juggling, throw up and burning, everyone knew what he was doing there since the duo Lone Catalysts had announced the color: CULTURE was going to celebrate the Hip Hop in its five declensions. From graffiti to beatboxing, from deejaying to dancing with, above the debates, its most visible part of all: RAP.

Swiftly using the scalpel in his collection of jazz, soul and funk records, distributing the strikes on his MPC, J. Rawls had given furiously organic colors to his 90s productions full of asperities. In his book, J. Sands' rhymes were all devoted to glorious, immortal, competitor and competitive Hip Hop."
