Demo Tape : FEAR - 1994

Let's talk about that demo tape recorded by the MC named FEAR in 1994. No info about him available online unfortunately after all these years and that's a shame because his three demos were really dope at that time and deserve some more shine.

After a short interview I did with Fear recently, I'm glad to give you some info about this MC... Big surprise first, even if his demos sound like some East Coast material, Fear was a West Coast emcee from Los Angeles,Ca.

Fear : Fear is short for Fearless a name I got from being unafraid to do anything on a dare when I was a kid. I grew up in Los Angeles, Ca. From 6 to 12 years old I lived in Birmingham, Alabama and before that I was born in San Diego, Ca. The tracks sound like east coast hip-hop because thats all I grew up listening to when I was younger. I loved east coast hip-hop, that was my main influence...Krs One, Nas, Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap and Lord Finesse... I fall into hip-hop when I first heard Rappers Delight. I memorized it and was rapping ever since then, writing raps for my brother and friends so we could battle other little kids...lol.. "

All the tracks of the demo tape "The Evil That Pens Do", "Hate" and "Freakee Flow" were produced by Kevin Sakoda a.k.a K-Von a.k.a DJ Kev.

Fear : "K-Von was a college DJ in Claremont, Ca. He hosted The Downlow Radio Show on KSPC, 88.7FM at Pomona College. He lived in NYC for a while. He helped me with my demo and helped me to get a lot of opportunities. I first met him at the station, he invited me to come on air and rhyme and we hit it off from there ! "

Fear : "After that I had a few options but nothing panned out, I signed with a few indies and did an album but it wasn't pushed. My album was called "The Moment You Fear". I was in the Unsigned Hype section of the Source magazine (July 2005). I still record now with a group called the Punishers and Con-Verse Allstars."

Mad Props to FEAR, thanks for your time fam.

Sue Kwon - RAP IS RISEN: New York Photographs 1988–2008

The legendary Photographer Sue Kwon is coming back soon with her second book "RAP IS RISEN: New York Photographs 1988–2008".

"The last decade of the 20th century into the first decade of the 21st represent a High Renaissance age of hip hop―an era in which rap music had reached critical mass and was exploding, and in which New York City itself witnessed the worldwide ascension and cultural domination of its powerful homegrown art form. In Rap Is Risen: New York Photographs 1988–2008, celebrated photographer Sue Kwon documents this era with a combination of incisive portraits and unposed, spontaneous images that capture the energy of these ascendant artists and the city itself.

With access to some of rap music’s biggest legends―some stars already, some at the cusp of their fame―Kwon’s work offers an intimacy rarely seen in the hip hop photography of the time. The Wu-Tang Clan, Biggie Smalls, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Big Pun, Eminem, Mobb Deep, the Beastie Boys, Big L, Ice Cube, De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest are all represented here, as well as dozens of other DJs and artists that communed with Kwon to produce these images. Method Man brushing his teeth, Fat Joe playing softball in the Bronx, Prince Paul kissing his baby son―the trust inherent between subject and photographer is evident in intimate, joyful shots like these.

Giving a rare glimpse into real rap culture, and featuring 300 photographs, most of which have never been published before, Rap Is Risen is a necessary offering to music history and the faithful followers of hip hop."

Krisengebeat - ILL Vibe - 2021

LP - 2021 - The Get Down Records

"Krisengebeat (born 1980) is a Beatmaker, DJ, Rapper and Graffiti artist born and raised in Berlin, Germany. His strong passion & love for the Hip-Hop culture emerged in the early age instantly after hearing his big brother spinning many oldskool rap albums like "Raising Hell" by RUN DMC...

When Onyx "Bacdafucup" was released in '93 this LP had a strong influence on Krisnegebeat. Hardcore Hip-Hop along with black hoodies became his thing! In 1997 he started to drop bombs on the neighbourhood walls with chrome & black letters.

Krisengebeat experienced his first grooves by playing the real drum set back in the days. His first analog sampler / multitrack recorder was a Roland SP-808 combined with "two turntables and a mic" and some other studio gear. After trying to combine sounds for the first time on a borrowed MPC 2000XL it became his passion! He is surrounding himself with dusty drums and samples until this day!

In the early 2000's he started to record his first rap album "Nur die Besten Ăœberleben" as a member of the German rap group Kritische Disstanz. This project was released 4 years later in collaboration with Berlin based Teroa Label by Akte One. This was also the first LP mastered by Chillerdt in the BKStudio (Berlin) and many more followed after! This collaboration tightened over the years and last until now!

One day at the beginning of the recent worldwide mix up which affected most of us, this led to a decision between moving to the studio and chill with the closest ones or just let it flow and push the pads on MPC Renaissance and start to release some instrumental music using extra free time in a productive way. That was definetely a good decision and after a plenty of motivating feedback it became the master plan to create the “ILL Vibe” instrumental LP!

Krisengebeat's - "ILL Vibe" album as a whole piece is a 34 minutes long journey through dimension of sounds inpired by the 90's Boombap golden era and filled with pure Hip-Hop flava which is now alive more than ever! Hard hitting drums combined with 12 bit samples and original noises of analog machines like the Akai S950, real vinyl crackles and all that highlighted with analog mastering! Enjoy the ride y’all!

This project is dedicated to all beatmakers & graffiti writers wordwide!" - courtesy of The Get Down Records

BlackMajik - Introducin' The BlackMajik - 1996

EP - 1996 - Subrosa Record

I don't usually do update, but this time it's different ... I have to share this short interview I did with the legendary Blackmajik, with whom the connection was made by my man Marco Scarano a.k.a DJ Scaramanga (thank you bro !).

Everyone should have a copy of this EP in his collection, I really like it ! So for those who don't remember or even know him, you need to know that BlackMajik from Queens,NY released this classic debut "Introducin' The BlackMajik" in 1996. It is a 6-track EP produced by BlackMajik himself and released on the UK-based label Subrosa Record, owned by Nick Harris (Executive produced by the legendary rap pioneer Glenn Sweety "G" Toby & Robert McKnight)
The tracks were recorded at Funky Slice Studios in Fort Greene Brooklyn and the EP features BlackMajik's partners Lord Emega, Baby Beretta, Cologne Gotti, Divine Culture, Ill Will and Justice, all members of the DO.Fam (DO for Dollars, written DU.Fam on the back cover). This is the only 12" released by BlackMajik... he disappeared from the Hip-Hop scene after that...

Where did you come from exactly ?

BlackMajik : "well originally I was born in Harlem NY but I moved to Queens when I was 5 years old. "

How did you fall into hip-hop ?

BlackMajik : "Hip-Hop was all around me, Break Dancing, Graffiti...all the elements.

What were your hip-hop influences ?

BlackMajik : "As an emcee my hip-hop influences were Rakim, Nas and Kool G Rap. I studied hip-hop, I have a masters in rapology...lol... I learned flow patterns, and breath control from KRS One facts...The production factor through paying close attention to details."

Could you give me more info about the DO.Fam ?

BlackMajik : "The DO.FAM was not only a rap mob but also a street gang... The Fam. So the rappers you hear are also gang members from the Fam...Baby Beretta, Colon Gotti, Emega... all from the gang. I still have connect with them, but mainly Baby Beretta a.k.a Black Demon ... still doing music till today ! "

How did the connection happen between you and Glenn Toby ? How were you signed by Subrosa Record?

BlackMajik : "I was heavy in da streets so I met Glenn through my street connects... All label and record connects through Glenn. I was also dealing with super manager Steve Lobel, my Brother from another Mother... but I signed through Glenn.

After that I got robbed !! How the fuck you get deal and never see income, never see your manager, never meet your label executives...these record label executives don't know the streets and the fact that some shit can lead to really dangerous outcomes... I've never seen a soul..... I was hitting in the industry... many waited for my release and I was let down and now my record is sold behind my back, my talent and hard work displayed and I received nothing ! "

What happened to Blackmajik after the release of the EP in 1996 ?

BlackMajik : "After I released the EP, I was still in da rotten apple living that street life... 'till finally it caught up with me... Jails, Prisons...etc

But here is a real fact, we still hear banging out that raw hip hop...2021. Almighty Do.Fam still strong... 1000 members and growing soon new melodik evil on its way... Hip Hop will never Die ! A lot of these modern rappers owe the fam, we created their flow and images and ideas...we're back....straight from the rotten apple...Peace"

Mad Props to BlackMajik and Big Up to DJ Scaramanga.

Eric B Featuring Rakim – Eric B For President 7" - 2021

7" - 2021 - KU

"It has been no small feat for KU to produce its first-ever major-label licensed replica reissue, but when you have the opportunity to recreate a piece of art involving “The God” Rakim, and producer/DJ, Eric B, there’s no going too far to get it right. The original master files for this record had been lost in the Universal archives, and the masters that were available were for the album versions that appeared on Eric B. & Rakim’s ‘Paid In Full’ (1987). Unfortunately, those versions are 6+ minutes and far too long to cut a 45. This led KU founder and label head to go back to his roots and do some record digging of his own. He was able to find a brand new copy of the original 45 on Discogs, and made the move to purchase it to have a high-quality audio restoration from the vinyl transferred into digital files to then be cut to lacquer. After acquiring the original version of the 45 it was discovered that the versions on the 45 were just the 12” single versions but faded out to make them fit on a 45. It took over a year to sort this all out, which included having Danny Roth Designs recreate the original 4th and Broadway labels, which the major label also no longer had." - courtesy of King Underground
