Mutazz - NYC Shine / Seven - 1997

 

12" - 1997 - Fuzion Records 

Released in 1997 on the independent Fuzion Entertainment label, "NYC Shine / Seven" is the sole official release from Queens rapper Mutazz. Like many underground 12-inches, this is one of those records where the real gem can be found on the B-side. In this case, that track is "Seven", a cut that immediately stands out and, for me, is the main reason to seek out this record. The lead single "NYC Shine" on the A-side is less my style.

No information about Mutazz is available online, which makes the story behind the record particularly interesting. Mutazz consisted of producer The Quixotic Child, also known as Quixotic (pronounced “Keyahtic”), from Jamaica, Queens, and rapper Mutazz from St. Albans, Queens.

The two met in high school through mutual friends and eventually came together to record what would become their only official release. Fuzion Entertainment was a collaborative label founded by four friends and artists, with Quixotic among its partners. After the Mutazz project, the partners went their separate ways and pursued different musical directions. Quixotic subsequently continued working as a producer, collaborating with artists and groups such as Ques a.k.a. Quesfire, Vision Quest, and The Worderer, although his later releases were not issued through Fuzion Entertainment. Mutazz and Quixotic also continued to release music independently after the label's period of activity. 

For me, "Seven" is the standout here and the track that makes this otherwise obscure 12" worth hunting down. If you feel like adding this record to your collection, it is still relatively easy to find and generally available at reasonable prices. Peace

Holy shit… the excellent German hip-hop label 90's Tapes hits hard once again with an album that everyone has been waiting for for years... the legendary "Father Time" by Toronto-based emcee Saukrates.

 "With “Father Time”, a previously unreleased chapter from Saukrates’ early career finally becomes available as an album. The material dates back to the ’90s, when the Toronto rapper and producer was making his name in Canada’s hip-hop underground with singles like “Still Caught Up” and “Father Time”. Some of these tracks later surfaced on singles and other releases, while others remained unreleased until now. Alongside the original versions, “Father Time” includes numerous remixes, demos and bonus tracks, with appearances from Common, Masta Ace, O.C., Kardinal Offishall and Choclair. Tmor & Schwinn : Elements Of Change Story.

E.O.C a.k.a Elements Of Change was an underground Hip Hop group from San Francisco with production by Bored Stiff's TD Camp. They were sought after by many labels in the 90's for their demo tape. You will see in this short video how things turned for the worse during the process of being recruited. Two kids from the Fillmore district in the city who had such an amazing show and back to back spin off rhyming pattern that had all who saw it amazed and intrigued. Wanting more for themselves & a bit of street pushed ego & money offerings got in the way of them signing with a major label. The album was independently put out by Hella Records some years later.

Funkin' Lessons was a hip-hop Radio Show hosted by DJ Blaze and Dr. Phibes, aired on 2MBS (102.5 FM) from 1993 to 1996 and based in Sydney, Australia.

Here is the Show #77 from December 20, 1996. This episode was the second episode of Funkin' Lessons to appear on FBi Radio 96.1 FM after several years on 2MBS. It stayed on air through the end of February 1997.

Patrock : "Counterclockwise is another group where I found no information. I think they are from California. They released the Demo Sampler Vol.1 with these four tracks: “Museum Of Tolerance“, “Buck Tha System“, “Autobahn“ and “Museum Of Tolerance (Remix)“. There is no release year, but in the lyrics, they mention the year '95. My favorite track is “Museum Of Tolerance“. "By the mid-nineties, Mr. Voodoo had established himself in the city's underground. Coming out of Brooklyn, he was part of the WBAI Underground Railroad circle with J-Smooth, while his radio appearances and freestyles brought his voice into the wider New York scene. Natural Elements — Voodoo, L-Swift, A-Butta and the wider circle around them — were building their reputation at the same time, through records, battles, radio and live sessions. With Charlemagne behind the boards, they developed a sound of their own, while the MCs pushed their writing, delivery and technical skills in a city where the standard was high.

This was New York in the mid-nineties: WBAI and Stretch & Bobbito on the radio, crews crossing paths, new records constantly appearing, and a generation of MCs taking the craft further in their own direction. "Formed in the Boston area in the early 1990s, God Complex consisted of 7L (DJ/Producer), Esoteric (MC), and KARMA (MC), with Madsol (Producer/DJ) serving as an early collaborator and mentor. 7L and KARMA had already begun making beats together in high school when they connected with Esoteric through his college radio show north of Boston. Madsol helped shape the group's early sound, getting them into studio sessions and onto independent radio while producing many of their demos and earliest recordings.

Between 1993 and 1996, the group recorded a raw body of work built from dusty samples, hard drums, battle rhymes, obscure sci-fi references, and comic-book mythology—the early DNA of what was to come.

Their first and only proper 12" arrived in 1996, a split release with AOI issued by the fledgling Boston independent Brick Records. From there, 7L and Esoteric continued together, building one of hip-hop's longest-running creative partnerships, ultimately leading to CZARFACE. KARMA shifted his focus from audio to visual, designing and shaping the graphic identity of the extensive 7LES catalog—a creative relationship that continues today. ParanormL & J Rawls - P&J Project - 2026

"ParanormL and J.Rawls first linked up through an overseas label called Swamp Records, which we were both signed to in 2007. J.Rawls was scheduled for a release, and the label had planned a tour for him and his artist, Holmskillit. Due to unforeseen circumstances, they needed someone to fill in for Holmskillit, and ParanormL's name was thrown in the hat. J.Rawls was down after hearing ParanormL's latest album, and this was the start of something special.

They did a week-long run from Tokyo to Osaka and had plenty of time to get to know each other. A brother-type bond was built, along with a mutual trust in their ability to rock shows without much rehearsal. The crowds were left slayed. Their first show at Club Asia was packed to the gills, and they really showed and proved.

With their shared love for hip hop and jazz-hop, it was a no-brainer that they should make something together while on the Japan tour. They started out with just one song, "What's That?", which eventually led to twelve tracks. In 2007, they released a full P&J mixtape hosted by Rawls, which received over 100,000 downloads.

Now almost 20 years later HHE has given this album the opportunity to exist in a physical form and reach listeners again.
