Book : Hip-Hop Rising: Profiles of the 90s.

Here is an interesting brand new book for your collection dropped by Martin Pearson & Deverill Weekes. Back in the early 1990s Martin Pearson was a music journalist in London and Los Angeles, and a huge hip-hop fan for many years. Among many other publications, he used to work for Hip-Hop Connection in the UK and he interviewed many artist big and small from that era. He has recently put together a retrospective book of his work (with contemporary commentary). It's called Hip-Hop Rising: Profiles of the 90s.

" Hip Hop Rising: Profiles of the 90s revisits the golden era of hip hop with striking images and fascinating interviews. The book is based on the original 1990s’ journalism and photography by Martin Pearson and Deverill Weekes, two Londoners transplanted to Los Angeles in the 90s. It offers a rare glimpse inside the creative and controversial minds of the likes of Ice Cube, Wu-Tang Clan, Queen Latifah, Beastie Boys, Eazy-E, The Pharcyde—more than forty interviews in all. "

Book : Normski: Man with the Golden Shutter

Normski was a vital witness to the period known as the Golden Age of Rap, when big US artists like Run DMC, LL Cool J and Public Enemy started to play in the UK. At the same time, a British music scene born of Black music and myriad multicultural influence was developing, giving birth to Jungle, Garage and Techno.

The author, who describes himself as having been a “young Black British homeboy photographer”, was in the right place at the right time to document the emergent music, community and social movements of hip hop and rap in the UK. Normski: Man with the Golden Shutter presents Normski’s personal journey through that world from the mid-1980s to early 1990s.

The book includes Normski’s often previously unseen photographs of Public Enemy, N.W.A., Cypress Hill, De La Soul, Goldie, Ice-T, Run DMC, Wu-Tang Clan and many others, alongside the photographer’s stories and anecdotes from the centre of what would become a hugely influential cultural movement.

ESCO Presents New York State of Mind: The 90’s Sound

“New York State of Mind: The 90’s Sound” is meant to represent the classic New York Hip Hop sound associated with producers from New York City in the early to late 1990s, such as DJ Premier, Pete Rock, KRS-One, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, EPMD, RZA, Marley Marl, Large Professor, Prince Paul and Scott La Rock. This golden age New York based sound is characterized by skeletal beats, samples cribbed from hard rock or soul tracks, complex wordplay and tough dis raps. Another definitive characteristic of this sound is the ability to sample different beats from a wide variety of sources ranging from jazz, funk and soul to rock & roll. Many of the sample-laden albums that were released during the 90’s would not be able to receive legal clearance today. Although it is still made by artists such as Joey Bada$$, Capital Steez, Astro and ROBBYWAYNE, the classic 90’s New York Hip Hop sound is no longer the dominant style or sound of production today, remaining somewhat prominent in alternative Hip Hop but rarely appearing in Top 40 Hip Hop singles. This compilation is a collection of some of the rarest Hip Hop songs from the 90’s by some of the best Rap artists of that time from New York City which truly represent the authentic, 90’s New York Hip Hop sound.    ESCO
