Swollen Members Feat Dilated Peoples – Counter Parts - 1999

12" - 1999 - Battle Axe Records

Here is the second 12" released in 1999 by the rap trio Swollen Members, consisted of Mad Child, Prevail and DJ Zodak from Vancouver, Canada. It came out on their own Battle Axe Label.

The wax consists of the tracks "Front Street" produced by The Alchemist on the A-side and "Counter Parts" on the B-side which features Dilated Peoples' Iriscience and Evidence who produced the track. It also features the legendary Kutmasta Kurt on the cuts. In my opinion "Counter Parts" is definitely the best track pressed on this very cheap 12".

Swollen Members - Shatter Proof / Consumption - 1997

Here is an interesting debut 12" released in the mid 90s by the rap trio Swollen Members, consisted of the Canadian emcees Mad Child & Prevail and DJ Zodak. It came out in 1997 on Battle Axe Records, a record label based at that time in Vancouver, Canada and managed by the group members.

12" - 1997 - Battle Axe Records

The A-side of the wax consists of the tracks "Shatter Proof " and "Consumption" featuring Aceyalone, both tracks produced by Evidence of Dilated Peoples and easily the best tracks of the 12-Inch. A sample of "Orange Lady" performed by The Weather Report in 1971 is used by Evidence for the production of "Shatterproof", and for the production of "Consumption" he used a sample of "The Rite of Spring" performed by Hubert Laws in 1971.

The B-side is composed of the tracks "Sunburn" feat Mix Master Mike and "Paradise Lost" featuring Tony Da Skitzo and Mr Brady, both tracks produced by DJ Zodak.

Interview : Dilated Peoples - May 2000

Here is a lost interview of Dilated Peoples recorded by Adam 'Quest' Walder after their performance at the Axis Nightclub in Boston, MA on May 2000.

"A week before the now classic “The Platform” dropped, I was lucky enough to get on the Dilated tour bus with Evidence, Rakaa Iriscience, and DJ Babu right after their performance at the Axis Nightclub in Boston, MA on May 16, 2000.

Before the interview, they smoked a lot of weed and to say I got hit with that second hand smoke would be an understatement. As hard as I tried to concentrate and ask the hard hitting questions, my brain was on another planet (thanks Ev!)." - Adam "Quest" Walder

Feel free to check his youtube channel, you'll find a lot of indie hip-hop shows and rare footages.

"Evidence has returned to deliver his third solo album, Weather or Not, the final chapter in The Weatherman series before beginning the next saga. “As a writer and a rapper, I’ve been using the weather as a metaphor my whole career,” Evidence explains. “On the Dilated Peoples song “Guaranteed”, I had a line that said, ‘Some think I’m clever, others think I’m the one who makes too many references to weather… or not.’ Every time I would perform that song live, the crowd would always say the ‘or not’, so I knew I was on to something, and it would eventually be an album title.”

For Weather or Not, Evidence tapped a stellar cast of producers to share duties with, including Alchemist, DJ Premier, Nottz, DJ Babu, Twiz The Beat Pro, Sam I Yam and Budgie. The album also features an all-star lineup of guests and friends, including Slug (Atmosphere), Rakaa (Dilated Peoples), Alchemist, Styles P, Rapsody, Jonwayne, Defari, Krondon, Khrysis, Mach Hommy and Catero.

“I made this album with loyalists in mind,” Evidence says. “There’s nothing that’s unintentional. There are no wasted words.” While the album predominantly highlights his talent as a rapper, Evidence is also a well known producer, photographer and videographer. But, for all of his non-stop, high-level productivity, Evidence is most notably modest, a quality fully captured on Weather Or Not.

“Now that the album is finished, I can see clearly that every single song serves its own purpose. To me, it’s like a playlist, or a greatest hits collection…except that none of these songs existed before I made them.” "
