DK Presents Atlantic Rap Vol. 1 LP - 2024

Originally released digitally in November 2023, the first volume of the Atlantic Rap Series dropped by the Nova Scotian-based producer DK is now available on vinyl with the help of De Rap Winckel Records.

"Atlantic Rap Vol.1 is the first volume of DK’s forthcoming compilation, a three-volume showcase of brilliant lyricists from North America’s underground that bumps to the sounds of DK’s knocking and imaginative boom-bap. Enlisting MCs from rap capitals like New York (UFO Fev, Wais P), Detroit (Frank Nitt, Phat Kat, E-Fav), and Canada (Ghettosocks, Saukrates), DK scores their vivid verses with his fusion of crackling samples, analog synths, and progressive instrumentation. Each beat flattens time, conjuring the warmth and grit of ’90s production while moving into the future with lush musicality. DK pairs every suite with the perfect narrator, established and rising rappers who deliver grimy street memoirs and intricate verbal assaults. Atlantic Rap Vol. 1 is a highlight reel from the long-celebrated and the next to blow up."

Mellow T - Keep It Real - 1993

12" - 1993 - Columbia

When you look at the cover of this 12" for the first time, with this cat with curly hair and his leather jacket, you could think it could be some smooth RnB shit... but in fact, not at all !

"Keep It Real" is the first single released by Anthony Brownlee a.k.a Mellow T originally from Hartford Connecticut, then moved to New Jersey after being signed by Columbia in 1993. Mellow-T was discovered by Raymond Pouncey, the executive producer, in a talent show that he held. Mellow T was in an original group that he put together named The Little Rapscals.

"Keep It Real" is available on the wax in its LP & Remix versions, both produced by Greg Nice from Nice & Smooth. In terms of productions, the LP version contains samples from "Jamilah" performed Houston Person and from "I know You Got Soul" performed by Bobby Byrd.

"Keep It Real" was supposed to be part of Mellow-T's album entitled "The Best Kept Secret" produced by Greg Nice, Phat Kat and Tony Dofat, but it never came out unfortunately. Phat Kat in a recent chat, declared that the connection happened thru Greg Nice when he was working on "Paranoia" for Nice & Smooth, Ray Pouncey was looking for tracks for Mellow T's album. Phat Kat was surprised the album was shelved... Another interesting unreleased album I'd like to see coming out one day... fingers crossed !

After that, Mellow-T released the single entitled "Pressure" on Rugged Route Records in 1995... It was his last single before disappearing from the music scene ...

Mellow T - Pressure - 1995

12" - 1995 - Rugged Route Records

Here is a 12" still in my wantlist... I think there is no chance to find it in a record store and it seems this record hasn't been for sale online for a long time...

To do a quick recap, Anthony Brownlee a.k.a Mellow T from Hartford Connecticut was signed by Columbia and released his first single "Keep It Real" produced by Greg Nice (from Nice & Smooth) in 1993.
Mellow-T was discovered by Raymond Pouncey, the executive producer, in a talent show that he held. Mellow T was in an original group that he put together named The Little Rapscals.
This single "Keep It Real" was supposed to be part of Mellow-T's album entitled "The Best Kept Secret" produced by Greg Nice, Phat Kat and Tony Dofat, but unfortunately it was shelved...
The connection with Phat Kat happened with the help of Greg Nice and the connection with Tony Dofat happened with the help of Faith Newman who signed Nas at the same time and introduced Raymond Pouncey to Tony.

In 1995, Mellow T was back with a brand new single titled "Pressure" which came out on Rugged Route Records. The 3 tracks of the wax were produced by Greg Jenkins a.k.a DJ Bizzy G and Boo Bass Bottom. I've never listened to the other tracks but I have to admit that "Pressure" is dope ... check the video !!!
