Lawless Element ‎- Mic Check / Wordplay - 2003

I think early 2000s was a bad time for hip-hop music. The lack of good vinyl releases was the reason that made me stop buying records at that time. But a few 12-inches remained good though. It's the case for that 12" dropped in 2003 on Running Man Records by Lawless Element, a Detroit-based duo comprised of Alfred "Cousins Griot" Austin  and Kavari "Magnif" Tapsico.

The 12" is composed of 2 songs titled "Mic Check" (Clean, Street & Instrumental) on the A-side and "Wordplay"(Street & Instrumental) on the B-side, everything produced by ILL-MC. Both tracks were supposed to be part of the album "Restoration", but it never came out.

BBC 1Xtra 20th Anniversary: Chris Read Mix - 12th Jan 2003 [Late 90s / Early 00s Indie Hip Hop]

"From the station's launch in summer 2002 to summer 2004 I was one of two Hip Hop mix show DJs on the BBC's station for 'new black music', 1Xtra. This month marks the station's 20th Anniversary, so I've embraced the embarrassment of my 1Xtra press photo and picked a selection of mixes I did on the station during that period to upload here on Mixcloud for the first time. They're definitely from a different era - recorded live, vinyl only, two channel mixer, no effects and with that comes a certain amount of imperfection I wouldn't stand by today, but they represent the time well and in some cases the music I was playing in clubs at the time. Full disclosure - I have given most of these mixes a light edit, cutting out a few sections I didn't like, but for the most part they're as they come. More of these mixes every week for a limited period!" - courtesy of Chris Read

Chris Read – Theme #1
MCM – I Got Soul
Extra Prolific – First Sermon
Extra Prolific – In Front of the Kids
Blak Twang – U Know (Instrumental)
Beats Rhymes & Life – U Know (Nas Megamix)

Beats Rhymes & Life – Alchemist 2001 Remix (feat Mobb Deep, Royce 5’9″, Apathy, J Zone & Huggy Bear)
Supernatural – Cosmic Slop (Instrumental)
Gang Starr – The Militia (Pete Rock Remix)
Ed O.G – To Much to Live Fo’
Kurious – All Great
Paul Nice – Bonus Beat #2
Brand Nubian – Hold On
Hieroglyphics – Soweto (Instrumental)

Willmatic - Surround Surveillance / Tru Story (Ave) - 2003

12" - 2003 - Last Kind Entertainment

The Bronx-based MC Willmatic, better known under the name of  Wildelux and former member of the hip-hop groups The Silent Onez from NYC and The Last Kind from Los Angeles with M-Fly, Megalawge a.k.a R-Diggy, Dj TMK, D-Strong and MajaClout, dropped in 2003 his first official solo 12" fully produced by Megalawge (Maxwell Gooding).

The wax is composed of the tracks "Surround Surveillance" & "Tru Story (Ave)", both available in their EP, Clean Edit, and Instrumental versions.

To be honest I like both tracks but the B-side single "Tru Story (Ave)" is definitely the best one for me. For its production, Megalawnge used the sample of "Up Against the Wall" performed by Quincy Jones from The Lost Man Original Soundtrack released in 1969. All the scratches were done by the legendary Kut Masta Kurt.

Interview : MF DOOM in Pound Magazine + The House List

From Pound Magazine #19 - October 2003 - Scans courtesy of Tim Burton

"We've made it to 100 episodes! Thank you everyone. I wanted to do something extra special for the heads on this one - so who better than DOOM. Culled from a handful of conversations recorded onto cassette, MF DOOM and I discuss the then unreleased and to me, unheard, 'MM FOOD' album. This was originally recorded in May 2003 for an expansive cover-story I wrote on DOOM for Elemental Magazine. But ... just let the convo really do the talking here.
The written-piece was a broad take on his life and work, where I interviewed many of his then collaborators. Like most of my work, I carefully archived the tapes with the hopes to one day revisit. Well, 16 years later I did just that. Digitizing the tapes at DiJiFi in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Josh Berg who engineered/mixed our Alias tribute show was brought in to lend his talents to bringing these tapes to life.
After listening to these again, there is no doubt in my mind how talented, intuitive and inventive DOOM is. It of course goes without saying, but I do feel like these chats I had with him shed much more light on how he willed some of the best hip-hop music of the last 20 years out of sheer desire to create, if even sometimes under a state of duress. A master collage-artist, poet, author, satirist, DJ, producer, performer. I truly hope this episode (like them all) will serve as a living document to his great accomplishments in music and art. I am appreciative of the time we had recording these and the few musical collaborations we did some 20 years ago now. Hey, what can I say, it's out 100TH EPISODE! Thank you to all the listeners as this is fully listener supported." - Peter Agoston
