Shazzy - Ghettosburg Address - 1994

 

Shazzy's second album entitled "Ghettosburg Address" originally recorded and shelved by Elektra in 1994 is definitely a project I'd like to see coming out on vinyl nowadays, along with some unreleased demos from '93-'94 if some exist somewhere... The album contains tracks produced by the legendary Pete Rock, Rockwilder, Da Funkey Hoodz, CMT & Ski. 

If you don't know Sherry Raquel Marsh a.k.a Shazzy and need a quick recap about her discography, you need to know that this Queens-based female emcee was signed to Elektra in the late 80s/early 90s and dropped two singles and her debut album "Attitude: A Hip-Hop Rapsody" in 1990. It was fully produced by Stimulated Dummies a.k.a SD50's, the collective of beatmakers comprised of Dante Ross, John Gamble (RIP) & Geeby Dajani (RIP).

"Rap has its own laws of action and reaction. Unlike most pop, rap records answer one another, naming names and hurling praise, insults or rebuttals. Until recently, rapping was almost exclusively a men's club, but a wave of women rappers appeared in the late 1980's and is gathering force. The first group - Queen Latifah, M. C. Lyte, Roxanne Shante - generally took the high road, ignoring the violent talk and blunt, unexamined sexism of most male rappers. But in the last year, the 2 Live Crew have gained wide notoriety for their lewd raps, while gangster rap has hitched its tales of urban violence to an increasingly vicious misogyny; when Ice-T describes himself as ''the bitch killer'' to glorify his outlaw persona, someone has to talk back. Female rappers are still greatly outnumbered, but they're beginning to speak up directly against macho bluster, and to remind the rap audience that women aren't exclusively ''bitches,'' ''hoes'' (whores) or sex-crazed ''freaks,'' as too many male rappers pretend.

As a rule, the new female rappers create personas that are more level-headed, more compassionate and less heavily armed than their male colleagues'. Boasting comes with the territory, but women speak less about mowing down opponents and more about their own skills. They're aggressive but don't pretend to be invulnerable or infallible, and when they discuss violence, they also pay attention to the mopping up afterward. Most of them have doubts about promiscuity. But female rappers don't suggest any feminist utopia; in their raps, sisterhood is competitive - for male affections and for dominance as rappers - and mercy is doled out sparingly and selectively.

The most ambitious and substantial new female rap album is Shazzy's ''Attitude: A Hip-Hop Rapsody'' (Elektra 60937; all three formats). Sherry Raquel Marsh, a k a Shazzy, is a husky-voiced woman from Queens who sends rhymes dodging and ricocheting through the crisp, layered funk riffs dispensed by D. J. Vanguard. Like other rappers, Shazzy has multiple agendas. She extols her own prowess, pays tribute to the soul and funk recycled in her backup tracks, shows off her quick tongue, free associates and exhorts listeners to dance. But she also moves into the Afrocentric political territory of Public Enemy and Boogie Down Productions with ''Black Is a Nation'' and ''Believe It's So,'' a song about racial and sexual discrimination that asserts, ''Nine women out of 10 will tell you hell no/ I ain't livin' like a body with no face/ Identity is set and my mind is a terrible thing to waste.'' As a bonus track on the CD, she moves into reggae dance-hall rapping and insists, ''Equality we demand'' and ''No man control me.''

Shazzy disputes the practice of sex as conquest in ''Heartbreaker,'' in which she confesses to playing games with her lovers, and in ''Giggahoe'' (it rhymes with gigolo), a scathing put-down (set to a jaunty New Orleans piano lick) of an ex-lover who didn't know a good thing when he had it. She tells high-living drug dealers with no future that ''You need a job, kid,'' and in ''The Way It Is,'' she details the collapse of families torn by drugs, shooting and child abuse. Shazzy is always serious, unwilling to drop her guard; the only jokes turn up as snippets between songs. But Shazzy knows the difference between preaching and rapping; she lets the rhythm carry the message, never the other way around. After that Shazzy dropped 2 singles, the first one 3 years later... "Ghettosburg Address" which came out on 12" and on Cassette. The A-side of the wax contains the lead single "Ghettosburg Address" produced by The Funkey Element Of Soul (Lyrics written by C-Money and beats produced by T.Rose) and the B-side contains the excellent "Stone Walls" produced by Da Funkey Hoodz. The second one "Pass Anotha Bag"/ "Pump My Brother (Ruff Stuff)" came out in 1994 and was produced respectively by Pete Rock and Rockwilder. Both 12" are very cheap so grab them asap !

The album "Ghettosburg Address" which is a 9-track project was scheduled to be released in early 1994 on Elektra Records. A few promo copies were recorded on tape and although the album never saw the light of day it was officially reviewed in Vibe Magazine in March 1994. 

GURU & Stikken Moov Freestyle on Future Flavas Radio Show - 03.05.95

Here is a freestyle dropped on Hot97 by GURU (RIP) and the Rap Trio Stikken Moov (Gus Da Vigilante, T-Bone Da Menace and Dog "God Flipped" a.k.a Dog The Rap Asserter from Queens, NY). Brown Sirround - The Set Up / Dead! - 1998

 

12" - 1998 - Leftshoo Records

Here is a 12" released by Djinji Brown a.k.a Brown Sirround in 1998. Djinji Brown is originally from Lafayette Housing Projects, Bronx and was the son of jazz alto-saxophonist Marion Brown (RIP). He is also known for being the vocalist of the hardcore NYC group Absolution founded in early 1987. 

 2 songs are pressed on this wax, "The Set Up" featuring Snake & Kali on the A-side and "Dead!" feat Chadio & Parlay a.k.a Par.Cognito on the B-side. Both tracks were fully produced by Brown Sirround, and were originally recorded in 1997. The 12" came out on Leftshoo Records, a record label managed by Marlene Duperley.

Coming from the Hardcore music scene, how and when did you fall into hip-hop exactly ?

Brown Sirround : "It's actually the other way around. I came from Hip Hop and fell into the Hardcore scene in 1986. I was deeply immersed into NYHC but by 1990 I made my way back to Hip Hop."

What were your hip-hop influences at that time ?

Brown Sirround : "When I got back into Hip Hop it coincided with my new vocation of audio engineering. I was lucky enough to land an internship at Greene Street Recording in the Soho neighborhood of NYC.

Many great Hip Hop acts worked there but when I got there in the spring of 1991, it was when I met my two biggest influencers in production. Eric Sadler of The Bomb Squad and Pete Rock.

Brown Sirround : "Ironically it was during my time in Hardcore and my friendship with a man named Jerry Williams that influenced me to go to audio engineering school, but I never engineered for any Hardcore groups." 

How did the connection happen between you and the artists featuring on the wax : Snake, Kali, Par.Cognito & Chadio ?

Brown Sirround : "Snake I met through my manager Marlene Duperley who was also featured in the hook. On the record her artist name was Kali. Marlene was the manager and owner of Leftshoo Records. She actually was the one responsible for the pressings and putting the record out. 

On the B side the tune "Dead" features two friends of mine from my building in the Bronx where I lived and grew up, Chadio of the Hip Hop group CRU who had an album out on Def Jam at the time and Par.Cognito who was an unaffiliated MC as far as being signed but very talented nonetheless. Par.Cognito actually lived on the same floor  as I did at the time.

Any studio stories ? 

Brown Sirround : " The song "The Set Up" was recorded in November of 1997 at D&D Recording in midtown. I booked the studio time at D&D and when they wanted to provide an engineer I told them I didn’t need one. All I needed was an assistant to show me around the room and I was good to go. After the people in the studio heard the beat coming out of the room and then the finished product, I soon landed a job there as a staff engineer. 

The song "Dead" was recorded in late March of 97. It was recorded one late night at Greene Street Studio in Soho where I worked previously and knew my around those rooms quite proficiently. This joint sounds like it was created in the Dead of the night in a dark alley with only one way in and one way out. "

Do you remember how many 12" were pressed in 1998 ? 

Brown Sirround : "I can't remember exactly how many we pressed, maybe 500 more or less, but I'm not exactly sure."

Why did you stop after that 12" ?

Brown Sirround : "I didn't stop producing after this single, but in the next coming years my production direction did shift. I was still at home in my studio making beats on the SP1200 and then on the MPC2000XL, but it wasn't until around 2000 that I started working with the label 7 Heads Entertainment. Most notably producing a few tracks for the group Unspoken Heard. Then in 2002 I dropped my first solo album mainly of instrumentals, it was called "Sirround Sound". The album was like a display of different beat styles I could create. In my mind they all had a similar thread which was my approach to the drum programming but I think the album went under the radar too because it was hard to classify into one genre."

Does an unreleased Brown Sirround album exist ?

Brown Sirround : "I have many unreleased tracks that could complete an album, but I haven't tried to put them out yet."
