Ghetto Professionals Present: Brick City Kids - Brick City Kids - 1997

Released in 1997, "The Ghetto Professionals Present: Brick City Kids" remains a gem of late 90s underground hip-hop. It came out on Ghetto Gold Recordings / Rawkus and it features two major voices from Newark, NJ : Tame One (R.I.P.) and El Da Sensei of the Artifacts, who both also formed the duo Brick City Kids. It's the only official release by Tame One and El Da Sensei under that name, making this 12" a particularly valuable document of their collaboration.

Behind the project was the Ghetto Professionals production crew, comprised of JuJu of the Beatnuts who needs no introduction, Vic Padilla a.k.a. V.I.C., a Beatnuts affiliate and member of The Groove Merchantz alongside Godfather Don, and Mike Heron, a producer who played a key role in the development of Hydra Records before later working with Rawkus Records.

The 12" consists of only 2 tracks : "Brick City Kids" (Clean / Street & Instrumental) on the A-side, and "What What" on the B-side. Together, the two songs form a cohesive and authentic snapshot of independent East Coast hip-hop in the late '90s. Nearly three decades later, this record still holds up remarkably well, serving as both a tribute to the talents of Tame One (RIP) and El Da Sensei and a reminder of the contributions of V.I.C., JuJu and Heron to the golden era of independent hip-hop.

I wish more tracks from this collaboration had seen the light of day. Maybe one day, the Ghetto Professionals will dig into their vaults and finally unveil some unreleased Brick City Kids tracks... Peace

The Beatnuts – The Beatnuts: Street Level - 2025

Here is a reissue of the iconic Beatnuts album "The Beatnuts: Street Level" which is the best Beatnuts album in my opinion and most definitely a classic. This double vinyl edition dropped by Producer Plug / Urban Series contains 2 bonus tracks "Hellraiser" (Original Version) and "Dawn Of The Dead". It's also available on CD & Cassette.

Triflicts - Genuine / Don't Make Me Try - 1996

12" - 1996 - Hydra Entertainment

Here is the debut single "Genuine / Don't Make Me Try" released by Triflicts on Hydra Ent. in 1996. This wax is really affordable and is definitely a must have.

Triflicts was a group consisting of Gab Gotcha, Creech a.k.a Creature and Buc Live hailing from Queens, NY.  More precisely Creature and Gab are from Corona, Queens and Buck is from Flushing/ Fresh Meadows.

Creature : " We formed the crew in 1991. Me and Buck Live went to High School together. After I dropped out I went to GED School and met Gab Gotcha. I introduced them to each other and we became a group. "

Between 1993 and 1994, Triflicts recorded a few demos produced by JuJu of the Beatnuts who was from the same area and by James Data a.k.a Jam DOT from Flushing, Queens. Those demos were sent to Island Records and got them a deal. They signed to 4th & Broadway - Island Records and "I'm Terror" produced by Jam DOT was supposed to be the official single but it didn't come out unfortunately...

Creature : " They didn't want to clear the samples or something ... This is 1994, almost 30 years ago... I mean it wasn't a million-dollar deal... lol ... only a single with an option for an album. We were young and we made mistakes. Things like that happen but I am very happy to be able to experience it though."

But their manager had a relationship with Hydra Entertainment so they decided to drop a single with them. That's how their debut single "Genuine / Don't Make Me Try" produced by JuJu of the Beatnuts was born.

On January 11th 1996, they were invited by Stretch & Bobbito on WKCR. Here is the interview & Freestyle aired that night.

Unfortunately it was their first and only official single ... After that Gab Gotcha was incarcerated ... and Buck Live quit music so that kind of brought the group to an end. The demos that got them signed to Island got put out a few years ago on the French label Sergent Records.

For the info, Creature is still in the game under the name of Creaturenomics. He dropped a bunch of solo stuff through the years and he has recently released his latest EP entitled "Hunt for the Future" on Vinyl & CD, with the help of Chopped Herring Records.

Mad Props to Creature. thanks for your time.

Take It Personal Ep #67 : A Tribute to Street Level

"Episode 67 is tribute to the timeless Beatnut's classic Street Level. For the first time on Take It Personal, we decided to do an album spotlight show and what better way to relive this '94 release than with some of the guys responsible for creating it?

We get to relive this classic album track-by-track with special guests Al' Tariq aka Kool Fashion and Psycho Les. We speak to Al Tariq first and later Les joins with his own perspective. Then, in typical Take It Personal fashion, we reunite the guys for the first time in many, many years.
In '94, we became immune to classic releases because they were dropping weekly, sometimes twice daily. Street Level isn’t just a classic album, it’s damn near perfect, front to back. The production is some of the finest you'll ever hear, too. While The Nuts went on to have greater success as a duo with chart-topping hits such as Off The Books and Watch Out Now, their energy and wit always seemed the best when they were a trio. In a week, we will be releasing both stand-alone interviews of Al' Tariq and Psycho Les as we discuss their solo ventures, Junkyard Juju, the reintroduction of Big Pun, J-Lo stealing their beat, plus life after The Nuts. There's even a discussion about a possible reunion.  But for now, check out our Tribute to Street Level - we know you're going to LOVE IT!" - Take It Personal Radio
