Verbz & Mr Slipz - The Way Fwd - 2025

LP - 2025 - High Focus Records

" High Focus Records is delighted to announce the return of Verbz & Mr Slipz on ‘The Way Fwd’, the anticipated full-length follow up to their 2020 LP ‘Radio Waves’.

An album fuelled by evolution, ‘The Way Fwd’ pays respect to the signature sonics that are synonymous with the duo; the dust laden, sample driven boom bap energies are present throughout, with a greater focus on arrangement, form and musicality this time around.

Sourcing from the many adventures both Verbz & Slipz have been on in the five years separating the 2xLPs; experiments across genres and BPMs informing the direction of travel before they completed the circle, ‘The Way Fwd’ combines new spirit with a dizzying timelessness; Slipz’ sophisticated brushstrokes informing Verbz’ penmanship across 12-tracks of true introspection.

With features from Cappo, Cam Thomas and additional vocals from India Shan, ‘The Way Fwd’ has all the makings of a classic release, especially if it ends up being Verbz & Mr Slipz’ last collaborative contribution to the genre…" - courtesy of High Focus Records

Preacher Earl & The Ministry - Return Of the Body Snatcha - 1993

In the crowded landscape of early '90s East Coast hip-hop, there are records that made headlines and then there are those that whispered their way into the crates of true heads. Preacher Earl & The Ministry's "Return of the Body Snatcha" is firmly in the latter category : a gritty 12" single that never made it to the charts, but still resonates with raw street level authenticity.

Preacher Earl, also known under the moniker Preacher Earl & The Ministry, was a Bronx-based rapper who emerged during the early 90s. His single first surfaced in 1993 on Phat Wax Records, and though it never became a household name, it earned enough respect to get a nod in The Source magazine's Sure Shot Singles section (May 1993 issue)

The 12" includes 2 songs entitled "Return of the Body Snatcha" (Street Mix / Ra Ra Mix / Unauthorized Radio Mix & Radio Mix), and "Gunz" (The Hollow Point Mix / The Buck Shot Mix). The project remains his most well known work and for those interested in grabbing it, you need to know that the wax is still very cheap and really easy to find.

Preacher Earl also contributed to the rare compilation "On the Down Low Vol. 1 & 2" released in 1995 & 1996, where he appears on tracks titled "14 Floors To The Lobby", "Fool I Got Your Back" and "Blessed with My Daughter", but we will talk about that comp in another blog post later. Peace

Masta Ace & Tom Caruana - Natural Forces - 2025

" Hip-Hop legend Masta Ace gets remixed by remix mastermind Tom Caruana (Wu-Tang vs The Beatles / Jimi Hendrix). Tom remixes material predominantly from the Masta Ace Incorporated era, as well as other stages in Ace’s career. What makes this project unique is the addition of 2 brand new tracks by Masta Ace, ‘Freedom House’ & ‘Uncle Larry’ which both see Ace in a retrospective mood.

The album flows like a live show with soundbites and skits from both parties. There’s tracks with Guru, Phonte, Wordsworth, Edo G, Torae, Stricklin and Large Professor. Ace and guests flow as if they were there onstage with the band creating cosmic vibes to the soundscape of kalimbas, vocal harmonies, funky basslines and banging drums! Gutter Snypes - The Trials Of Life EP - 1994

EP - 1994 - Liberty Grooves

Here is a very interesting EP from England, released in 1994 by the group Gutter Snypes. This group was formed in 1993, consisting of Cel One, Sigher and Prime Cuts. The same year, the group connected with Johnny F and began working with the label Liberty Grooves, a hip-hop record label and shop based in Tooting (South London, UK), a partnership that resulted in the release of their acclaimed "Trials of Life" EP.

Gutter Snypes & The Liberty Grooves Posse

The EP consists of 5 tracks fully produced by Sigher, with all scratches by Prime Cuts. It also features guest appearances from Jeopardy, Principal Mark & Sniper G.

Even if you're not necessarily a big fan of UK rap, I still strongly recommend this EP which I consider to be one of the best records to emerge from the London hip-hop scene in the early-mid 90s. Its price remains quite reasonable and the wax is still easy to find online. Peace
