Sho Nuff - Long Time Comin' 1994-1997 EP

It's time to see Sho Nuff's unreleased material comin out...  Here is an 8-track EP entitled "Long Time Comin' 1994-1997" available now on vinyl with the help of the dope record label Chopped Herring Records. 

" What we have here is a SLAMMIN' piece of mid 90s rareness outta Virginia Beach by way of Soundview in the BX. Cats MIGHT know the track 'Nuthin N Duh World' from the extremely hard to find 1998 "Can I Hit It The Soundtrack" LP.  Also, the track '4Rum Duh Souf' appeared on a boot called 'Check The Flava Vol 1'. Both tracks were recorded a few years before either of those records dropped. And apparently, there was also a very low run 12" including both joints that was released in 1996, but no one, it seems, has found a copy yet. ANYONE? " - courtesy of Chopped Herring Records

Highlight on Sho Nuff

A lot of kats would like to get more info about this emcee called Sho Nuff who delivered 2 dope tracks titled "4Rum Duh Souf" and "Nuthin N Duh World" in the mid/late 90s, so I think it's time to give him some shine. 

If you don't remember these joints, the first one is mostly known for being part of the Bootleg called "Check The Flava Vol.1" which was released in 1997 on X-Clue-Ziv Records, and the second one was on the soundtrack for the indie film "Can I Hit It?" released in 1998 on Bigg Starz Entertainment. Both records are still hard to find nowadays but those tracks might be a good reason for you to try to find them.

But very good news for the record collectors, I'd like to let you know that there was an official 12" released for the singles "Nuthin N Duh World / 4Rum Duh Souf " in 1996 but it was a small press so not very many copies around. Sho Nuff himself doesn't even have one ! So good luck to dig it, the hunt is open... to be honest I've never seen this record with my own eyes. 

About Sho Nuff, you need to know that he is a Bronx, NY native who began acting at age 10, appearing in an MTV commercial and movies. He moved out of NYC to Hampton Roads, VA initially with his parents when he was still in HS in '89. He was attending LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts with classmates like Marlon Wayans, Adrien Brody, Omar Epps and Bokeem Woodbine. He didn't like VA at first so he spent the next 4 years going back and forth living in VA Beach and NYC.

Sho Nuff was a member of the Bronx-based group called "Erb'n Telepathy" with Optimus Rhymes (RIP), Eldorado Red and Supa Kat DJ Gumby.

The crew was founded in 91 but unfortunately Optimus Rhymes was killed in a robbery in Jamaica circa '92-'93. Eldorado Red lived with Sho Nuff in Virginia from 1993 to 1995. They were both affiliated with the famous group Yaggfu Front (Spin 4th, D'Ranged & Damage and Jingle Bel). They were a part of their crew/entourage in the 94-96 timeframe. They were like their mentors and almost got them signed to Relativity Records but things didn't line up.

In 1996, Sho Nuff signed with Bigg Starz Entertainment, a record label owned by James Person and Reynard Pringle. Bigg Starz was located in Newport News / Hampton, VA. Sho Nuff was making a name for himself as a battle rapper and indie producer all over the Hampton Roads / Tidewater areas and word got to James Person and Reynard Pringle. They came to see him perform and approached him.

His debut single "Nuthin N Duh World" was officially recorded in 1995 and was his first vinyl pressing. It was produced by Sho Nuff at TMH Studios in VA Beach. Moreover the official music video was shot in the parking of TMH Studios. The B-side single "4rum Duh Souf" (From the South) was produced by DJ P-Lo of Jett Black Ent. He was the first producer he ever worked with after moving to VA for good in 1993.

Last info for you fellas ... some 90s unreleased material exists, a few tracks recorded between 1994 and 1997 with productions from Sho Nuff, DJ P-Lo, Jingle Bel (of Yaggfu Front) and D-Tech. Here are some snippets straight from Sho Nuff's vault especially for the blog... Enjoy !!!

Northwest Hip-Hop Scene : Tribal Music Inc.

As for me, Northwest Hip-Hop scene is certainly the most interesting after the Canadian and the East Coast scene.  Especially Seattle (WA), which is represented by a lot of groups with jazzy productions and a laid-back East Coast vibe. 
First, I discovered this scene via Conception Records, with the fat productions of Jake One and Mr Supreme. But later, I was surprised to discover this indie label under the name  of Tribal Music Inc or Tribal Productions. I had never heard about this label until I watched a skate video with this dope track called "Don't think about It" performed by Sinsemilla, a group composed of H-Bomb and Topspin.

This track is from "Untranslated Prescriptions", the first release of Tribal Music Inc. It was a tape produced by Vitamin D which came out in 1995, featuring Ghetto Chilldren (Vitamin D, B-Self, Capabilities, Culture Born), Infinite, Sinsemilla (H-Bomb & Topspin), Phat Mob, Union of Opposites and more...

In 1996 , their first official release "Do The Math" came out with productions by B-Self, King Otto, Poetry, Samson S, Shahzad, Topspin, Truth and Vitamin D. 
The album featured the same MCs as the tape plus newcomers like Narcotik (Tizzy-T & C-Note).

The same year 14 Fathoms Deep on Loosegroove Records came out. I remember reading a little review of this compilation written by Schenectadyfan in 2009 on T.R.O.Y Blog. 

« Fourteen Fathoms Deep is a semi-obscure compilation from The Emerald City. The vibe on this cd is mostly rugged and moody which is appropriate for a place that gets about 50 inches of rain a year. If you need some heady tunes for zoning out during the winter months, this is the ticket. Seattle's Scene is a bit different from its neighbors. The gritty nature of this collection is worlds away from much of the keyboard funk the west coast is known for. Shift gears and take a ride, northwest style. »

2xLP / CD - 1996 - Loosegroove Records 

Two years later , a new comp presented by Impact Entertainment & K Records representing the Olympia-Tacoma-Seattle underground scene saw the light of day : Classic Elements.

Slim Tribal Productions's representation in this comp with only 2 groups : Ghetto Chilldren & Sinsemilla, but the album mostly produced by Dj Sayeed & Brian Weber is really dope. The other artists are Jaleel, Troubled Sums, Beyond Reality, Soulstice, Black Anger, Blak, Nomad, Jace who is also a member of the Silent Lambs, Source Of Labor ... 

For Info, Source Of Labor started out in 1989 with Dj Kamikaze, Negus & Wordsayer but in 1997 Kamikaze was replaced by Vitamin D.

Between all these comps, one of the most prolific crew is certainly The Ghetto Chilldren. Vitamin D formed the group in 1991 with B-Self while they were students at Garfield High School in Seattle. I know a tape has been released under the title "Monologs & Soliloquys" but I've never seen a physical copy.
