Diggin' Session : Tribute to Bill Withers

This Diggin' Session is a tribute to the American soul music icon Bill Withers who died on Monday, March 30 at the age of 81 due to heart complications. Rest In Peace...
The sample of the day comes from the song "Make A Smile For Me" performed by Bill Withers, from his " +'Justments" album released in 1974.  It was used by the Toronto-based group Citizen Kane for their single "Blackrain" released in 1996.

Diggin' Session : Milt Jackson - For Someone I Love - 1973

LP - 1973 - CTI

When you read the names of all the Jazz artists involved in this album named "Sunflower" released by Milt Jackson on the New York based label CTI Records in 1973... Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Billy Cobham... there is no doubt you need it in your record collection. The album is dope and is a real samples factory. We will focus on the song "For Someone I Love" for this Diggin' Session, which is a track sampled many times by the Beatmakers. Here are a few examples !

Diggin' Session : Sparrow The Movement VS Eloise Laws

12" - 1995 - Unruly Records - Photo courtesy of Ill Mind

In 1995, the 12" released by Fla-Fla and Dre(12) a.k.a Sparrow The Movement came out on Unruly Records. It was their first release and was composed of the legendary song "Rhyme Impotence".

One of the samples used for the instrumental comes from a song named "Love Comes Easy" recorded by a female artist called Eloise Laws (sister of the well-known Hubert Laws). The song comes from the album "Eloise" which was released on ABC Records in 1977. The wax is really cheap and really easy to find.

Damu the Fudgemunk's 20 Favorite Sample Flips - 2017

LP - 2017 - R3DEF

"First time on vinyl! Previously only available on cassette or soundcloud. This one take, all-vinyl mixtape was created by Damu The Fudgemunk in 2014 for the legendary (but now defunct) Ego Trip Magazine's "Top 10 Sample Flips" feature, in which he highlighted and analyzed his favorite sample flips ... 10 wasn't enough so he highlighted his favorite 20. Consider this the soundtrack / companion piece to the written article. The mix consists of classic rap songs mixed along with the original samples that were used to construct the beats."
