Sah-B - Some Ol' Sah-B Shit - 1994

In the early '90s, the East Coast rap scene was overflowing with raw talent, yet many promising artists slipped through the cracks before getting the recognition they deserved. One such case is Sah-B, a female rapper from East Orange, New Jersey, whose 1994 single "Summa Day / Some Ol' Sah-B Shit" remains a snapshot of an album that never officially came to life.

12" - 1994 - Reprise Records

Released on Reprise Records, the single was meant to introduce Sah-B's debut album "Some Ol' Sah-B Shit", which ultimately never saw an official release beyond a rare promotional cassette circulating at the time. What we're left with instead is this two-track single, produced by two respected figures in East Coast hip-hop, that hints at what could have been a strong addition to the mid '90s rap landscape.

On the A-side, the lead single "Summa Day" is produced by legendary Juice Crew architect Marley Marl, but to be honest this track isn't really my cup of tea, and in my opinion, it wasn't a good choice for a debut single... I prefer the B-side with "Some Ol' Sah-B Shit", produced by K-Def.

The track "Some Ol' Sah-B Shit" stands as a small artifact of '90s hip-hop history. For collectors and fans of forgotten East Coast rap, the single offers a glimpse of an artist who had the voice, attitude, and production backing to make a real mark. Sadly, Sah-B's moment remained largely frozen in this lone single.

The 12" is really inexpensive... if you like the single "Some Ol' Sah-B Shit", don't hesitate! You can also check her unreleased album... some songs are definitely worth a listen. Peace

Unsigned Hype : Systahood

I was recently in contact with Kandi Kain, member of the well-known group Systahood with DJ Twista, and asked her if she could upload the demos they were talking about in the Unsigned Hype section of the Source magazine of September 1995.

So here are the 3 demos, all produced by Mufi for DieHard Productions, the excellent track "Woman 2 Woman" featuring Sah-B, "Enjoy Yourself" and "Sh#@ Just Happens".

Kandi Kain :"Sah-B and Kandi Kain link up to show how the Brick City and Illtown femme spitters can ignite a fire track. This was actually the foundation of a friendship that has spanned over two decades and have built a strong organization of girls and young women to take control of their destiny."

Kandi Kain : "As soon as Mufi let me hear this beat I instantly fell in love with it! It was four beats per minute ahead of its time and everybody wanted that track. But I put my dibs on it and everybody was curious as to what I would, or should I say, "could" do with it. Especially being the new chick "from up the hill" coming down the hill to rock on a 18th Street track. Well I just did what I do......"

Kandi Kain : "After hundreds of hours of perfecting my Illtown flow in the basement of Godfather Dee I was ready to step out on my own. I enlisted the production skills of Mufi from Die Hard Productions. This was one of the first songs I wrote, solely and wholly, about the criminalistics chronicles of a young woman trying to find herself in the concrete jungle. Learning the ropes of the streets from the most unethical sources. But how else could a gangsta b*%ch survive?"

In 2008 Kandi Kain wrote a book called "Hip Hop Holla-Backs: Systahood Edition".

Today, she's still active and works for H3B Radio .

K-Def - The Way It Was - 2015

"So we've already announced two LP's and by now it should be evident that not only is K-Def unpredictable, but also that he has a soft spot for nostalgia and while he considers himself a forward thinker, he occasionally likes to reminisce over “The Way It Was.”

We at Redef are often surprised at the "Ghetto Man's" output. The Way It Was is a special collection of tracks gathered from K's 20 plus year career as a Hip Hop producer.

The album contains notable instrumentals originally released in the 90's during his House of Hitz run, many curated from cassettes, DAT's, floppies and even vinyl B-Sides to be reproduced/remastered for this collection.

The 90's material is also accompanied by some special guest appearances by Redef affiliate Blu on 3 tracks, Quartermaine, Redef's newest addition Kunal, and even Damu the Fudgemunk (new vocal tracks created using old beats).

When naming the album, K-Def chose the title, because the prominent theme of the music is that it was composed in the 90's using the techniques and tools of the era, including like the MPC 60 or MPC 3000, before K upgraded to using virtual instruments and software based platforms in the late 90s. The Way It Was is an essential release to any K-Def fan"
