Percee-P & Ekim - Now They Wanna See Me - 1992

12" - 1992 - Big Beat Records

Back to the early 90s with this 12", the first record released by legendary MC Percee-P the Rhyme Inspector from Patterson Housing Projects, South Bronx. It came out in 1992 on Big Beat Records and features the tracks "Now They Wanna See Me" with Ekim (Cuts/Scratches by DJ Dr Butcher), "Puttin' Heads to Bed" and the excellent "Lung Collapsing Lyrics" featuring Pharoahe Monch of Organized Konfusion who went to high school with Percee P. This track was featured in The Source's Fat Tape of October 1992.

About the production, It was handled by Todd Ray a.k.a T-Ray (known for his work with Double XX Posse) and Ekim a.k.a DJ E-Kim.

On November 29th 1990, Lord Sear brought Percee-P onto the scene as one of the very first guests on the brand new Stretch Armstrong & Bobbito radio show, a move that would quietly set things in motion for one of the Bronx's sharpest lyricists.

Lord Sear had known about Percee-P for years through his brother Dice, a respected local MC who'd learned to rhyme under the guidance of their uncle, MC Coolly Breeze. Back then, Breeze was part of the Undefeated Four, the same crew that included none other than T La Rock, Bronx royalty in his own right.

That night marked Percee-P's first ever appearance on the airwaves. His delivery was raw, and impossible to ignore. Stretch, who was juggling his role as A&R at Big Beat Records, wasted no time... he called Percee P the very next day and Big Beat gave him a deal... the rest is history.

It was the start of a journey that would cement Percee P's place among the Bronx underground's most technically gifted MCs, a reputation built not on hype, but on pure lyrical precision.

SLD a.k.a Sick Lyrical Damager

It was a real pleasure in 2020 to listen to an unreleased track from Sick Lyrical Damager dropped by Chopped Herring Records. I've been a true fan of this MC since day one and I would have liked there was more SLD tracks on this "Shazam X – The Producer Project EP", but it was better than nothing.

For those who don't know this excellent Bronx-based emcee and to make a quick recap about how everything started for Rodney Summers a.k.a Sick Lyrical Damager, you need to know that SLD and the legendary Andre the Giant a.k.a A.G. from Showbiz & AG grew up together in the same neighborhood in the South Bronx, Patterson Projects precisely. SLD and Showbiz also went to school together.

Everything began in the mid 80s when A.G. wrote a song called "A Bomb In My Pocket". Rodney heard the verse and he told him that he'd write a verse for that song and that's what he did. A.G. heard the verse and then they became rap partners. The duo was called Rod Swift and Dre Smooth. For the info, an unfinished album was recorded with A.G. at that time, with productions handled by a kat named Double DEE a.k.a Devious Devastator. Rod has also recorded a full solo album with this producer, but everything still remains unreleased. After A.G. appeared on Lord Finesse first album in 1990, him and Showbiz became a group and Rod became Sick Lyrical Damager and went solo.

The legendary Rhyme Inspector Percee-P who is also from Patterson Projects, grew up with Sick Lyrical Damager... they went to kindergarten together. Percee P introduced him to DJ/Producer Shazam X at the record shop Shazam worked at. After hearing him rapped, Shazam X took him under his wings and became his producer. He put him on his EP released on TNT Records (sub-label to Freeze records) around 1993-1994 with the single "Scary Thoughts".

EP - 1994 - TNT Records

In the mid 90s, SLD and Percee-P performed in LeFrak City in Queens and Vance Reid saw their performance. After that he signed them to his record label called Vmax Records. Percee-P's 12" (Nowhere Near Simple/ Don't Cum Strapped) and SLD's first 12" (Scary Thoughts / It's Over) will be released by this label in 1996.

12" - 1996 - Vmax Records

A third 12" entitled "Respect Costs More Than Moneywas released the same yearstill produced by Shazam X. It came out after the other 12-Inches but the single was originally recorded prior the other tracks. In February 22nd 1996, SLD and Percee P were lived on the Stretch & Bobbito Show on WKCR for the Promo of this 12". Here is the freestyle aired that night :

After his deal ended with Vmax Records, SLD started his own label called Makin Millz Records and put his second single out "Makin Millz / Everybody" in 1998. Another wax to grab if you're enough lucky to find one for sale.

12" - 1998 - Makin Millz Records

For the info, in 2007 SLD added another name to his rap name... Lazy I... and put out a full album called "The Focus".
And if like me, you're looking for more unreleased material recorded during the 90s, you need to know that a demo tape exists and was sold on ebay a few years ago. 2 demos from that tape are still unreleased...

Mad Props to Rodney Summers

BEATS IN PROGESS - Keep On Diggin EP - 2021

"After setting up BeatsinProgress in 1997 with Rob Life many moons ago, Tufkut with his trusty Akais950 and stack of breaks, thought for the 20th anniversary it’d be worth making something special. So with a delay due to adding the extra ingredients, here is the ‘Keep on Diggin’ EP.

Alongside accomplished MC Chrome (DefTex, Chrome & Ill Inspired) for the title track, with a certified Remix by Producer extraordinaire SirBeansOBE (Parlour Talk, Transcript Carriers, MC Kelz) we have some auditory feasts for our music family.

Craig G (Juice Crew, Queensbridge Finest) laces ‘Kill the Nonsense’ rhyming with deadly intent; with an instant flip with a BIP remix too, in case you didn’t catch it the first time.

Percee P (Legendary Lyricist, Rhyme Inspector) fires off ‘Beastin’with his trademark delivery at battle speed and keyboards by Simon Vincent (DefTex, The Occasional Trio) to bring a flair to an rhythmic track designed to get the heads bopping.

A extra bonus track, is the unreleased ‘I Will Not Stop’ from Kashmere (KingKashmere, Strange U, the Iguana man) recorded at the time of his ‘Raw Styles’ records. Performed live with the Receptor records artists but never released on vinyl until now!

All of these tracks plus some select instrumentals are finally available through Burning Anger on beautiful vinyl.

The Artwork is also celebratory of BeatsinProgress reaching 20years.

Tufkut wanted something special and collaborative, so he asked Design friends to do their own versions of the BeatsinProgress logo.

Dan Lish designed the full colour front cover, using his signature style of intricate pen work.

The rear cover has Mark Bode with his characteristic style boldly above the artist credits.

To add the broadly talented Paul Subtwo, with his beautiful version of the logo on the label.

The whole package of Production, Musicians and design Artistry, we hope will be high on your list of collectables and provide some inflections of more to come.

All on limited vinyl released by Burning Anger it’s a timeless record – it won’t be around for long, so buy a copy …or two!. A celebration of our culture and Tufkuts devotion in bringing you something you’ll remember." - courtesy of Britcore Romance / Burning Anger

Available on Black vinyl (100 copies), Green vinyl (100 copies) and Test Press copies (25 copies) handnumbered with stickered labels and alternative cover artwork.
