" Tribute mix celebrating Pete Rock & CL Smooth's masterpiece 'The Main Ingredient', which turned 30 recently. 'Mecca & The Soul Brother' is the more iconic/important album, but Main Ingredient slowly became my favorite over the years.....for a lot of the same reasons I lean to ATCQ's Midnight Marauders over Low End Theory.
Pete's production went from a harder/dusty sound on MATSB, to a warm/melodic vibe on TMI. The samples Pete chose hit your soul in that sweet spot: from Cannonball Adderley on 'In The House', to George Benson on 'I Get Physical' + 'In The Flesh', to Roy Ayers on 'Searching'....masterful. " 30 Years ago, Tribe's 'Midnight Marauders' & Wu's 'Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)' were released on Nov. 9, 1993. For some, a hard decision had to be made that day: Do you go with the conscious vibes of Tribe, or the hard street raps of Wu? The familiar sound of ATCQ, or the debut from the mysterious guys wearing hoodies with stocking caps covering their faces? If you were lucky, you walked out of the store with both (paid or not).

Those 2 albums changed my life, so 5 years ago on the 25th anniversary I created 'A Clan Called Wu - Enter The Marauders' as a tribute to both masterpieces. This is the 2nd chamber in the Wu x Tribe blendtape saga. The 1st volume featured Wu's gritty vocals over the jazzy Midnight Marauders instrumentals. This is the reverse combo - Tribe's bouncy vocals over RZA's grimy production.

"Sometimes great art is created when times are tough, and 'Moment Of Truth' is a good example.  Facing the adversity of Guru's pending court case, lost loved ones, alcoholism and in-fights, they poured that energy into their most personal & emotional album.  To come off of a 4 year hiatus and drop a 20 track classic (with no skips!!!) on top of all that is mind-blowing.   

I like how Premier's production reflected both the highs & the lows....especially the moody cuts like Moment Of Truth, Next Time, In Memory Of, and Betrayal.  I love a grimy Preemo beat as much as the next guy, but when he starts to get into his soul bag too?!?!

The sample selection on this one was crazy....trying to recreate some of his chops/flips on this mix gave me a whole new appreciation for what he did on the album.

The result was a raw, harder hitting sound, and arguably their best album ever. 'Hard To Earn' is near & dear to me, so I had to get back in the lab and record this 25-year tribute to this legendary album. "November 9, 1993 will forever go down as one of the greatest days in hip hop history. Two of the genre’s most revered albums dropped on the same day: Wu-Tang Clan’s debut ‘Enter The 36 Chambers’, & A Tribe Called Quest’s third LP ‘Midnight Marauders’. To mark the 25th anniversary of both LP’s, I thought it might be a good idea to try and take the vocals from Wu-Tang’s album, and blend them over the instrumentals from Midnight Marauders. The intent was not to improve on the originals in any way….that would be impossible, as I consider them both to be perfect bodies of work. Rather, it was about orchestrating a fun concept, and putting a totally new spin on these well-worn classics. The contrast of Wu’s gritty street raps over Ali Shaheed’s jazzy production works in a pleasantly unexpected way.
